Is keratin hair treatment safe?

You may be skeptical of whether or not you should get the Keratin Treatment. The truth is, some Keratin Treatments are safe while others are not. The Brazilian Keratin Treatments (BK T) has an ingredient, formaldehyde, which is a very harmful cancer causing agent.
However, some Keratin Treatments don’t have formaldehyde at all, but if it doesn’t, your hair will be back to normal after just 1 wash. Some brands use the harmful formaldehyde in their Keratin Treatments, because it helps keep your hair straight even longer than if it didn’t include the formaldehyde. That way, they can increase the price. The problem is, some brands (like BK T) that use formaldehyde, claim that you will get smooth, silky hair using Keratin (which is a very vital nutrient for your hair). The thing is, BK T’s product wouldn’t have been nearly as effective if the ingredient formaldehyde wasn’t included. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Brazilian Blowout safe?

Is Brazilian Blowout safe?

Is Brazilian Blowout safe?

The word is spreading about Brazilian Blowout – a hair straightening product that promises to turn frizzy locks into silky smooth manageable hair. No one is doubting that it works, but there are concerns about the product’s safety.

Brazilian straightening is designed for people with frizzy unmanageable hair. There are different brands and methods. The hair is first shampooed, then partially dried. Next, section by section, the stylist applies a straightening formula, the hair is dried and flat ironed straight to seal the formula in. Then there’s one final rinse and blowdry.

What exactly a Brazilian blowout is, and how it’s different from Japanese straightening?

The Brazilian Blowout is different from Japanese straightening and other Brazilian straighteners because it doesn’t completely straighten the hair. The hair still has plenty of volume and body and can still be worn curly or wavy. The Brazilian just softens whatever curl or wave you have. If the hair is air dried without a blow dryer, it will still have wave or curl but no frizz. On the flip side, if you want to blow dry your hair straight, you can do that, without a brush, in a fraction of the amount of time it would have taken without the Brazilian. Also, with other methods, there is a line of demarcation, meaning that when new hair grows in, it is curly/ wavy while the rest of the hair is straight. This blowout method washes away with time and is diffused, so there is no noticeable difference between new hair and treated hair. Other methods also have harsh chemicals in them like formaldehyde. The Brazilian Blowout does NOT have formaldehyde in it. And none of the chemicals in it are carcinogenic.

Formaldehyde is a carcinogenic, and used in this application as a volitile liquid (quick drying) component to keep the keratin compound in liquid form, which dries once you have applied it to the hair. Formaldehyde is an acceptable additive in cosmetic use but the FDA doesn’t have to approve cosmetic products as they do drugs.
